Simulations of Membrane-based Percussion Instruments

چکیده

Recent research on Physical Modeling has led to 2{D discrete{time structures based on the Digital Waveguide. These structures are well suited for eecient yet accurate simulation of wave propagation in an ideal membrane. Nevertheless, real membranes often behave diierently than ideal ones, due to the material they are made of and to the eeects of the environmental conditions. In this work we consider some aspects, crucial for the audio signal, concerning real membranes , and we will develop a 2{D waveguide model encompassing these physical structures. Moreover, we will excite the membrane with a new hammer model, here adapted to t the hammer{membrane interaction.

Advantages and Limitations of Simulating Percussion Gestures for Sound Synthesis

The increasing availability of software for creating realtime simulations of musical instrument sounds allows for the design of new visual and sounding media. Nevertheless, from a conceptual and pratical point of view, the question of how these new instruments can be controlled has rarely been addressed in the literature. In this paper, we present a framework for the control of virtual percussi...

Measurements and efficient simulations of bowed bars

Bowing bar percussion instruments is an increasing part of the repertoire of modern composition and performance. Yet the system has not been studied systematically. In this paper experimental measurements of bars of bar percussion instruments bowed by a double bass bow and by a bowing machine are presented. They examine the relationships between performance parameters and perceptional parameter...

Energy Based Synthesis of Tension Modulation in Membranes

Above a certain amplitude, membrane vibration becomes nonlinear due to the variation of surface tension. This leads to audible pitch glides, which greatly contribute to the characteristic timbre of tom-tom drums of the classical drum set and many other percussion instruments. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to take the tension modulation effect into account in drum synthesis. Some model...

Fractal correlation dimensions and discrete- pseudo-phase-plots of percussion instruments in relation to cultural world view

Fractal correlation dimensions C and discretepseudo-phase-plots are presented for four percussion instruments to show basic kinds of persussion instrument behaviour. The xylophone and the churchbell a small and a large instrument are two western examples, which are shaped in a way to have among inharmonicity at least some harmonic partials. The tibetian zimbel and the javanese gong gede again a...

Transcription and Recognition of Syllable based Percussion Patterns: The Case of Beijing Opera

In many cultures of the world, traditional percussion music uses mnemonic syllables that are representative of the timbres of instruments. These syllables are orally transmitted and often provide a language for percussion in those music cultures. Percussion patterns in these cultures thus have a well defined representation in the form of these syllables, which can be utilized in several computa...
